Bribie Island is one of 5 sand islands in Queensland. Originally a sandbank, it has existed as an island for centuries.
There is evidence of Aboriginal settlement. It has long been a fishing and holiday destination.
Before the bridge was built in 1963 there was a regular steamer ferry service to the island, which attracted day trippers and campers.
After 1963 the island became urbanised and now has a population of 20,000 in 5 suburbs and excellent infrastructure including a shopping centre and schools.
